Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the option to question certain calls made by the official, following the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
