European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
